Minařík povede derby vítěze
Přestože se nedělní poslední den mítinku v Baden Badenu obejde bez účasti českých zástupců, budeme nesmírně zvědavi na vrcholný dostih celého mítinku.
September 2009 newsletter
In the early part of the summer there were a lot of local windstorms and floods in various parts of the Czech Republic, and our television showed almost daily what are normally small streams overflowing, and areas of forest that had been blown down. Several localities suffered calamities, some of them more than once. It was good to return to a period of less extreme weather in August, though now we would welcome some steady rain again.
Meran Results - Sun, Aug 30th 2009: Chapeau, but no wins, for Vana
The feature race at Meran on August 30th was a Gr. 3 steeplechase, open to Italian-trained horses only; Czech trainers had to concentrate on the side races. The only Czech winner was Night Rider who captured one of the hurdles races of the meeting. He is trained by J. Hanacek and was ridden by Italian jockey D. Columbu.
Big Czech successes at Merano: Paracchini defeats Royal Mougins again
As usual, Robin anticipated me and was first this morning in reporting on yesterday's dual Czech win at Meran. The logical conclusion to draw from that, seems therefore to be that your Italian correspondent fom now on should get up earlier on Monday morning, and so report on Sunday's races before Robin from Prague does !
Yesterday's Meran meeting centred on the duel opposing Vana-trained Paracchini against Holcak-trained Royal Mougins, in the feature race -a 'corsa siepi (hurdle race or proutene prekazky) over 3,500 metres.
Sixteen impresses
The Skanska Grand Prix, third of the four qualification races for the the Velka Pardubicka, which will be run on October 11th, produced a winner with all the credentials to win the big race. Though Sixteen won the VP in 2007 and 2008, she has generally been considered a less than great champion. In 2007, she did not beat much, and in 2008 she only won on the disqualification of a better horse, Amant Gris, and in general she has a good rather than an excellent record. This time, however, she was formidable.
Super Lord
An interesting entry for the Skanska Grand Prix, the third of the four VP qualification races, is Super Lord. I am told that he is currently stabled with trainer Cestmir Olehla at Svetla Hora, and if all goes will he will remain there until October.
Sat Aug 22nd: interesting race day at Pardubice
The meeting at Pardubice on Saturday features the Skanska Grand Prix, the third qualifying race for the Velka Pardubicka. The favourite will be Sixteen, VP winner in 2007 and 2008, which is already qualified. Mandarino was a good 2nd in the June qualifying race. Baggio and Numero Due are not yet qualified, but may well show that they are contenders for the VP on Ocotber 11th. Marath impressed in the August qualifying race in 2008. An interesting runner is Super Lord, entered for the VP and now trained by Graham Smith.

Czech wins in Merano
Josef Vana-trained Sherento finished only 2nd in the feature race of yesterday's Meran meeting -Premio Pollio, a steeple chase over 3,550 m. However, in the Premio Zivago over fences, the Czech dominance proved absolute. The race was captured by Wrbna Racing -owned Jam-Bella (trainer C. Olehla, jockey J. Faltejsek) who preceded Gilmour (V. Luka- B. Matl) and Charley (Vana-Bartos).August in Meran offers racing every Sunday (but a meeting is fixed for Saturday Aug15th too), culminating in a Gr 3 steeple chase on Aug 31st.
